BHESCO

In November Brighton & Hove Energy Services Co-operative (BHESCO) ran a series of five sessions with the Sussex Syrian Community, with practical information on how to save energy and reduce fuel bills. Collaboration and Partnership

We are continuously working to develop networks and good working relationships with other groups and organisations in the city, and ensuring that what we do complements and works well with what others are doing. These are a small selection of the organisations we have been collaborating with:

Council Community Safety Team: we provide advocacy & support for community members who have suffered racist abuse or harassment, and have collaborated with the Safety Team on these issues. We also have a close working relationship with Lucy Bryson at Brighton and Hove City Council, who attends our events and supports us to develop our projects and in liaising with other local services.

Sanctuary on Sea: we are on their Management Committee and work closely with them.

Best Foot Music: working with musicians from different community groups.

Thousand for a Thousand: our musicians have supported this local project that provides housing for migrants, by performing at their fundraising events. We have also make referrals to them when we know of people who have no access to housing.

Crisis Classroom: we taught local people how to make Fatoush, a traditional Syrian salad, at their event at Sussex Downs College in Lewes, accompanies by local Syrian singer, Hala Arsalan.

World Food Project: We helped run classes in how to prepare Syrian food.

Brighton and Sussex Universities: we have been working with students and medical staff from Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust to support their research into the delivery of services to migrant communities in the city.

Voices in Exile: one of our committee members volunteers every week with their food bank and interpreting.

Global Tots Stay and Play: at the Friends Meeting House for refuge and migrant mums and tots.

Jollof Café: We helped set up this weekly community vegan meal at the Cowley Club, and regularly support them.

Blakers Park Great Get Together: we ran a stall with City of Sanctuary and entertained the local crowd with some traditional music and singing.

Black and Minority Ethnic Community Partnership: we have an ongoing relationship and regularly represent our community at events.

Workers Education Association (WEA): several of our members attended a taster session on teaching adults and job opportunities in this field.

Al Nour Academy: we joined their summer outing to Drusillas Park in June 2018, so our families could relax and have a great time together.

International Women’s Day: we participated in the beautiful sewn map of the world, and joined in with some sewing!
